Who’s Your Fav Rom Hero?

It’s Monday morning, you’re a little hung-over, your boss is yelling at you, the coffee tastes like piss again, you have to skip lunch so you can drive your kid to the doctor’s office… whatever, Mondays suck. So maybe we can hang out here and talk about my favorite topic…

Romance Novel Heroes.

What makes a romance novel hero stand out for you? What makes you fall in love with him? What are your favorite qualities in romance novel heroes?

My favorite RNH of all time is Sebastian, the Marquess of Bonnington. He was not the “main” hero, per se… he was actually the B-plot, but he just really stood out for me. But he shows up in a handful of books by Eloisa James (Wild Pursuit, Duchess in Love, Your Wicked Ways) in pursuit of another secondary character, Esme. He starts out as a staid, stick-up-the-arse character who is always castigating Esme, a woman with a reputation for being wild. Slowly, he thaws out and begins seeing her as a woman… and he even loses his virginity to her! Once he falls in love with her, he is just so earnest and determined in his pursuit of her that Esme couldn’t help but just give in to him. *sigh*

Anyway, your favorite Romance Novel Hero. Talk amongst yourselves!

Oh! Nice topic, Bam! My favorite RNH is Jack Devlin from Robyn Carr’s Virgin River. He embodies all of the things that I wish that I could have in a man. He’s a war hero, he’s kind and generous, he loves his family, he’s great in the sack, he’s patient and kind. That being said, he’s what I want IRL.

My favorite fantasy RNH is Rhage. I know, I know: homoerotic overtones, brand dropping, stupid name spellings, ridiculous mythology, blah-blah-blah. For some reason none of that matters to me in this book. I love the way he loves his woman and will do anything to protect her, including abstain. I love that he’s desperate for her touch. I love that he makes with the dirty talk. I’ve re-read Lover Eternal about a million times. Rhage just does it for me.

Hmm, my favorite would be Jamie in Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander. He is strong, stubborn, yet he is kind and soft hearted when need be. He is just yummy to me!

    Love the topic..

I have two favorite heroes. Roarke from the In Death series. he can have his way with me on his waterbed any day.
Second is Jack from Suddenly You by Lisa Kleypas. He is so swoonworthy and enjoys those rasberries.
For the heck of it, Dain from Lord of Scoundrels by Loretta Chase. Even after his woman shoots him, he still doesn’t mind having his way with her *G*

I second Katiebabs Dain from Lord of Scoundrels and my second is Grey Roulliard from After the Night by Linda Howard.

    And of course Roarke.

Hmmm. Apparently I like tall, dark, handsome and extremely alpha.

omg, yay, another Rhage fangirl! What really gets me about Rhage is his complete and utter devotion to Mary. The mere sound of her voice transfixes him. And he would do anything for her. le sigh.

In the whole scheme of things though, I would have to go with Jamie Frasier as my ultimate all-time fav hero. He’s human: flawed, sexy, brave, intelligent and canny, funny and charming. He manages to be both alpha and beta at the same time. I don’t think I’ll ever get over my love of this character. :)

Only because you ask I can’t think of any names, but a quality I adore is the Hero who can always remain calm while the Heroine is spazzing out, especially if he can give the wry smile and a few comedic, well-placed, sarcastic, zinging observations/comments. The kind that makes the Heroine stop mid-rant and want to smack him or kiss him or both in her frustration. I love a Hero with amazing timing and wit. So much easier to find in a book than in real life, you would think. He should always be the epitome of control until She makes him lose it. For some reason I can only come up with Rhett Butler who fits that bill.

I’m gonna have to go with Jamie Fraser from the Diana Gabaldon books. What a man…

Kenny, from Suzanne Brockmann’s Out of Control. He’s strong and protective and sexy but even more than that he’s such a frickin’ geek. He’s bumbling and sweet and he’s such a smart ass he almost always manages to say the wrong thing on his way to saying the true thing.

I’ve fallen temporarily in love with quite a few but Kenny’s the one I come back to.

I love Drifter/Ethan McCabe from Demon Night. I love his crazy sexy wild west ways, and the stuff he says, and his horse sense and his general guy-ishness.
Sorry all of you, but Drifter kicks all of your heroes asses.

Okay, okay, Jamie is pretty good too, and Rhage. And Dain! ah.

After reading Blue Eyed Devil by Lisa Kleypas, Hardy is one hero that should be added to the yummy hero list.
So many men to choose from! I am starting my own heroe harem.

I lurve me some Marc from Rachel Vincent’s Stray and Rogue. He’s broody and rough around the edges and still can’t seem to get enough of Faythe. I’d kill for a real life version. I’d take Jace any day too though. Hell, all the guys in these books are sexy as hell! It’s just an added that they’re all werecats.

    :-)

That, my dear, is one brilliant idea.

How about March from Ann Aguirre’s Sirantha Jax series? Not a romance, but there’s enough of Captain TightPants in him that he makes me tingle.

And I love me some Captain TightPants.

I have some old-school faves. Derek Craven from Dreaming of You. Gabe Bonner from SEP’s Dream a Little Dream. (guess I like books with dream in the title). And because I don’t think anyone does heroes better than Sandra Brown, Burke Basile from Fat Tuesday. h-o-t.

I also like Rhage, except for his eating habits, and I luuurve Eloisa James’ secondary characters. Right now I’m hooked on Jemma and Elijah.

OHHHHHHHH!! I love Gabe Bonner too! I was just thinking about that book the other day. I was like, “What was that book where the heroine was the wife of a tele-evangelist and became all poor and sad and had to work at restoring an old drive-in so she can feed her son?”

Gabe was just so… damaged. And that scene with Rachel in the rain? Swoon.

I swear, Jill Sorenson and I are in sync, man.

I’d have to say my favorite romance hero is actually Gavin MacKinnon from Debra Dier’s Beyond Forever. In the first few chapters, he’s so insanely charming and sexy that it made me shiver to even read it. And then something major happens… and BAM! We’re thrown into a scenario that lets us see another version of him altogether. It’s a fun way to watch different sides of the same man. He’s just… *sigh* Love him.

I’d have to say that I’m also madly in love with Adam Black, from Karen Marie Moning’s The Immortal Highlander. He makes several supporting appearances in other books and shines, even in those tiny bits. But when he gets his own story… forget it. He’s just too much.

Oh, how can I choose just one? I am in the middle of Dreaming of You and I am LOVING Derek Craven. Oh the angst!

I would have to include Sam Starrett and Stan Wolchonok of the Brockmann Troubleshooter series. Sam is wild Texas cowboy and Navy SEAL rolled into one. Stan is the strong, silent type. Completely Alpha, yet not needing to be in control of every situation. Their devotion to their women….::sigh::

Julia Quinn’s Benedict Bridgerton. The infamous Roarke.

Yeah, I’m liking the harem idea. :)

Forget top 100 books of all time, we should do top 100 heroes of all time!

I can’t pick just one. How about top five?

Derek Craven. Rupert Carsington. Lionel Redmayne. Diaz. Luke Bardell.

I’ll have to second Kim with Gray Rouillard from After the Night. The man was a walking, talking erection, but his devotion to Faith once he realizes he’s in love with her… damn. Linda Howard knows how to write alpha heroes who are borderline scary, but oh-so-sexy.

Ann Aguirre, did you notice that somebody mentioned March and compared him to Mal Reynolds? Oooooh…

  22. katiebabs
    22

Diaz from Cry No More is one sexy mo fo of a hero. Le sigh….

  23. Ann Aguirre
    23

*looks* Hey, so she did. Awesome! I’ll be curious to see how that comparison holds up in book two.

Totally agree about Diaz, Katie. If anyone was wondering, the authors behind my heroes were, in order:

Lisa Kleypas, Loretta Chase, Kimberly Cates, Linda Howard, Anne Stuart.

Shannon - Good call with Stan Wolchonok, I love him. That whole story is one of my faves. I love how he just can’t get over the fact that Teri loves him. Makes me feel all gooshy inside every time.

I also love Dane Hollister from Linda Howard’s Dream Man. Talk about your walking, talking erection. I love how earthy he is.

Also, how ’bout Wulfric Bedwyn? I adore him. He’s amazing in his effort to get Christine to see beyond the title.

For my money, McKenna from Lisa Kleypas’s Again the Magic is my favorite of her historical heroes. I love how mad he gets at the end of the story at the heroine for nearly throwing away their love. And well, then there’s Gage Travis from Sugar Daddy. I loves me some Gage, and my love affair with him only continues in Blue Eyed Devil.

Diaz! Yessss. When he does that Vulcan neck trick on the heroine and says “take a nap”! Now, why do I find that sexy?

I luv Jack Seward from All Through The Night by Connie Brockway and Peter from Cold As Ice. Both of these guys think they’re the best at what they do; but get completely trounced by their respective heroines.

I’m also quite fond of Gray from Between the Lines by JAK - great subtle sense of humor and one of the few heroes who gives his leading lady time to fall in love with him.

I’m with Cormia– I liked March from Grimspace.

Also like Carrie Lofty’s angst-y heros like Mark from Sundial and Will Scarlet from her upcoming What a Scoundrel Wants

Linda Howard can sure right some sex heroes. Her next book that comes out in June looks to be a pretty good read.

While I don’t think I’d pick him as my favorite, Sebastian is a wonderful choice!!!

I really like Mary Balogh’s distainful dukes. She has two, one in More Than A Mistress, and Bedwyn in Slightly Dangerous. (I see someone else gave Wulfric Bedwyn a vote, too. ;-)

I’d give Rhett Butler a vote, too, if he counts.

Mmmmm I love Sebastian, Lord St. Vincent from “Devil in Winter”, playboy, lazy type who’s totally aware of his hawtness. He grows into a very loving husband who takes a bullet for his belurved! I can’t help but love that he says he’s scoundrel, rake etc. he’s such an evil person and Evie’s reaction is kind of like “yeah, uh huh you’re a real bad guy”, which makes me giggle.
