Review: Lover Enshrined

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008 - Books, Grade: B, Romance: Paranormal, Y-Messie Reviews

Shuzluva: Aaaaaaaaaand…we’re back! The subject of today’s virtual ping-pong match is Lover Enshrined, the sixth book in J.R. Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood series. Who will type faster? Who will be reduced to screaming in capital letters first? Before we take off the gloves, we wanted to make sure everybody’s on the same page; thus, Bam has asked me to provide you with the following brief synopsis.

When we last left the BDB, Phury had become the Primale, a glorified sperm donor for the Chosen, the chicks that live in The Fade with the Scribe Virgin. The Primale is responsible for churning out new members of the BDB by making sure he gets every one of the Chosen prego. Phury, being the self-sacrificing whiner that he is, has voluntered for the responsibility, taking Vishous’ place. Of course, the irony here is that Phury is a virgin (don’t tell me that crap in the bathroom de-virginized him. Really.), a loner, and a drug addict. He also thinks he is in love with Bella, providing himself with more reason for self flagellation since Bella is well into the elephant-like gestation period and Zadist is going bananas with worry, which I have to admit is kinda cute and horribly annoying at the same time. Phury’s first sperm recepticle is Cormia, who was introduced to us in Lover Unbound. Cormia is unsure of herself, scared of her discontent with the Fade and has fallen head over sandals for Phury. We will definitely delve into this below.

Review: Dark Needs At a Night’s Edge

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008 - Books, Grade: A, Romance: Paranormal, Reviews by Ai! Grabe...

Hello, beeeeetches. It is I, Ai! Grabe… your new fabulous reviewer, with my fabulous debut review of the only book I’ve been able to finish for the past few months. You see, I’ve been having this terrible problem. I love to read. I’ve been reading since I was… I don’t know, a fetus… and the FSM knows if I were the only WOMYN left alive on the planet full of those nasty vampire creatures from I Am Legend, I would totes be okay if I had in my possession every book I have ever wanted to read. True. Story. Speaking of stories, stop me before I tell you mine, lest I go back to, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…” ON WITH THE REVIEW, AI! (FSM, I babble more than Bam tends to do) [Bam: Oh no you di’int, beeeyatch!] Where was I? Oh, yeah… Kresley Cole’s Dark Needs at a Night’s Edge was the ONE book that was able to pull me out of my reading funk. I received it in the mail, tore it open, sat down to read, and three hours later, Fini! It was great. And for that, it gets an A. Oh, and also, because it’s pretty great.

Mine to Possess by Nalini Singh

Saturday, February 9th, 2008 - Books, Grade: B, Romance: Paranormal, Shuzluva's Reviews

Bam,

Someone recently asked me if I was enjoying maternity leave. I’m supposed to enjoy sleepless nights and the inability to nap when the baby naps (that’s what they tell you to do so that you don’t completely lose your mind) since I have twins that need my attention during the day as well? Before you call Child Protection Services on me, note that I adore my little Handsome Pants. And the girls are…warming up to him. Thank goodness! But I didn’t write you just to lament that my time off isn’t being spent blissfully sleeping and catching up on television. Know what I do during the 3 a.m. feeding? Read! Yep, HP rests on my left forearm, which is the hand that holds the book, while the right holds the bottle. I need some more books. I also need time to write reviews of said books. With that in mind, I read Nalini Singh’s Mine to Possess.

For those of you who haven’t read Slave to Sensation (or any of the other books in the Psy/Changeling series), please note that while Nalini does a commendable job of briefly tying in previous plots and characters without completely retelling, this series builds on itself. The Psy/Changeling world is a complex place, with extremely well fleshed-out personalities and significant plot lines that tie in from the prior novels. If you haven’t read the previous books in the series, you are missing out on great writing, great romance, great fantasy and great world-building, which make each pass in the Psy/Changeling world more interesting and exciting. Nalini has an ability to write (at current count) four books that do not repeat each other in terms of plot, tension or characterization. For that alone, I think it’s worth reading each of these books.

Review: Wicked Deeds on a Winter’s Night

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007 - Books, Grade: A, Romance: Paranormal, Shuzluva's Reviews

Grade: A-

Bam,

I know you weren’t all that interested in reading Wicked Deeds because it didn’t focus on the Valkyries. Well, dumb decision on your part. It may not focus on those crazy women we’ve come to know and (in some cases) love, but it does continue to focus on the Lore and the folks that make up the creatures of the Lore. And while I know you’re generally wary of series (except for a certain group of vampires that love to have extraneous H’s in everything they say, do and name) [Whord to your muthah. -Bam], Kresley Cole continues to impress with her Immortals After Dark series. I know you weren’t totally cahrayzee about A Hunger Like No Other due to Emma’s lack of spine and general annoying personality. While we didn’t review No Rest For The Wicked, I will briefly say that I was much happier with Kaderin as a heroine, but thought that Sebastian wasn’t nearly as strong as I had hoped.

Well, Wicked Deeds finally seems to get the mix right in all respects. The heroine is actually strong without being feisty, spunky or a Mary Sue and the hero, while being a total alpha, isn’t foolish enough to believe he can’t ever be wrong about something (or many things for that matter). And Ms. Cole continues to write buildup and actual sex with terrific heat.

Ann’s JR Ward Lightning Reviews

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007 - Books, Grade: B, Romance: Paranormal, Reviews by Annie

[Bam’s Note: Ann read these books one after the other. In ONE sitting. That’s dedication. Oh, and here be spoilers. Lots of ‘em.]

Okay, first, I cannot keep the titles straight. If Bam wants to fix this she can, but otherwise, whatever. Y’all will know what I’m talking about. Oh, and I’m not worried about spoilers. I figure everyone else in the known world has read these so big deal, right? But you have been warned.

Book 1 - Hello, wildly oscillating POV. I usually can’t stand books that open in the POV of someone who’s gonna die. Or hell, someone who isn’t a protagonist. JR Ward writes well enough that it minimizes my distaste, but still, not an auspicious start. If I hadn’t been so damn determined to wade through these books, I probably would’ve put it down before page 5 and never picked it up again.

Bam told me, “Stick with it. It gets better.”

So I did.
